In Tune with Tradition - Perspectives on Session Etiquette in Irish Traditional Music podcast

Episode 15: 'How to find your voice in Irish traditional music'

Guest: Lexie Boatright

Host: Tara Connaghan

Released: 8th April 2026

In this episode of In Tune with Tradition, Tara Connaghan speaks with Lexie Boatright, a harp, concertina and fiddle player from the United States.

Lexie brings a rare combination of perspectives. She is a professional Irish traditional musician, a teacher, an American who spent years coming to Ireland as a young musician, and someone who has thought deeply about learning, belonging, culture, confidence and the invisible social rules around sessions.

This conversation explores the social nature of Irish music sessions, why belonging is not only about musical level, how American and Irish social values can clash, why self-awareness matters, and why being invited to sit in does not always mean you have been fully invited into the session.

Lexie also talks about adult learners, rhythm, fluency, finding your own voice, accompaniment, competition culture, recording yourself, and the pressure musicians feel to become “good enough” to never be rejected.

Her message is clear: there is no level where you become unrejectable. The better question is whether you fit the music, the people and the social vibe of the room.
